    Description

US 1803 Self Folded Letter, New York to Bordeaux, France, short letter in French dated 13 August 1803, two line black COLONIES PAR BORDEAUX handstamp. Examined at London by the Admiralty Prize Court in 1803, SFL dated New York 13 August 1803.  The vessel that was carrying this letter was captured by the British Navy and taken to London, and after examination of the letter by the Admiralty Prize Court, the letter was endorsed  "Ouverte a l'aumiraute de Londres" and forwarded to Bordeaux by some means. Upon arrival in Bordeaux, the letter received the 2 line black COLONIES PAR / BORDEAUX handstamp and charged 2 centimes being the ship letter rate for letters addressed to port of landing. This letter is an early example of a censored Trans-Atlantic letter from the era of the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815). Rare.
